The project contract is approved. It commenced on 1 July 2010 and is due to complete 1 December 2012. The project is 6 stories, over 1365 Sqm. The Project value is approximately £30,000,000
The scheme comprises demolition and construction of a six storey surgical centre, three storey surgery building and an IT/telecoms building. It will provide facilities for general surgery Urology and Gynaecology as well as Gastrointestinal Medicine and a combined Emergency Assessment Unit, Outpatient clinics combined with specialist investigation departments. The seven operating theatres will include an admission lounge. The Centre will include 14 Intensive Care and High Dependency beds in cubicles as well as a new hospital kitchen staff and visitors restaurant shops and offices. Demolition of the old surgical buildings will happen after the new centre has been built.
The Trust has now given approval and funding to the scheme which will be built over three phases:
Phase 1: The EAU will be designed to receive all adult emergency and urgent referrals by ambulance. It will be located next to the existing A&E Department in the Queen's Building, and together they will act as the emergency hubs of the Hospital. The EAU will have 30 assessment places and quick access to diagnostic tests, such as X-rays and CT scans.
Phase 2: The 5 storey surgical ward block will consist of 4 wards, each with 28 beds all in single rooms with their own en-suite toilets and showers.
Phase 3: 2 more new buildings to provide operating theatres and a Critical Care Unit.
